1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one show little respect for you because you are young. Show other Christians how to live by your life. They should be able to follow you in the way you talk and in what you do. Show them how to live in faith and in love and in holy living.
Wow ~ what a great week on the mission trip to Lake Traverse reservation in Sisseton, SD. We have some really awesome youth in this congregation and you should all be proud of them. A little about our week ~ We stayed on air mattresses in the basement Sunday school rooms at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton. Our days started bright and early, as we were up by 6:30 and helped with breakfast prep, breakfast cleanup, building cleanup, packing our paper bag lunch for the day and then morning devotions before we were out the door to either help at the nursing home or assisted living center, 'Kids Club' or painting at a church or the local tribal school. After our work day, we went to the Tiospa Zina tribal school for showers and a little free time in the gym before we headed back to our living quarters, aka: Grace Lutheran Church, for dinner prep and clean up from that, then on to our evening activity, which varied from night to night. We had everything from a speaker on native culture, a free night in which we went to 'the tower' where the kids were able to just hang out and have fun, we also went to Sica Hollow state park for a little hiking and games and a cook out with the local community members. After our evening activity we had a gathering where the whole group had an informal worship time, with singing and the famous 'Shout outs' and 'Yea God's' from there we had our own group time where we recapped our day and had great conversations as a group.
This was a great experience for the 11 youth and 3 adult chaperones that attended. I hope that next time more youth take advantage of this opportunity to experience a mission trip.
We would like to give a big 'Shout out' and 'Yea God' to an anonymous non member of OSLC for the gift of money to help with expenses, Brian Kletscher for the use of his enclosed trailer for the trip, Randy
Hammerschmidt for the chips and all of the people who have given us their prayers, words of encouragement
and especially supporting the fundraisers we have during the year to help pay for the cost of these trips, we couldn't do it with out all of you!
Youth that were on the mission trip were, Mackenzie Irlbeck, Rachel Holman, Lauren Willhite, Sam Dammann, Tucker Juhnke, Gavin Hesse, Charles Dammann, Lindsey Willhite, Josh Hesse, Maddie Geske, and Delaney Willhite, and adult chaperones were Dan Hesse, Cheryl VanMeveren and Julie Senst.
